Hermann Max Pechstein grew up as the second son of the master craftsman Hermann Franz, his wife Lina and his brothers and sisters Richard, Walter, Gertrud, Irma, Ernst and Hugo in Zwickau. He had a particularly close relationship with his sister Gertrud, proven by numerous letters and postcards kept in the collection in Zwickau. Besides the drawing Pechstein also portrayed his sister in the oil painting ‘Lady in front of a mirror’ (1917) presented in the permanent exhibition.
