Max Pechstein, Eidebul (extracted from: Heads)

1917, woodcut
Inv. no. 2013/21/K2, acquired in 2012

Pechstein and his artist friends of the ‘Brücke’ group early adopted the medium woodcut. This medium reduces form to the essential and the artists transfer this reduction to the paintings and drawings of their time. Pechstein worked his whole life with such woodcuts. The chieftain Eibedul is characterized by dynamic contours and reminds of Pechstein’s stay on the island of Palau in the South Seas in 1914 which deeply influenced his work.
