Only after leaving the western front and beginning to serve in the Berlin air force Pechstein is able to artistically process his travel experiences on the Palau Islands and re-create all those artworks he had to leave behind when hastily departing. Starting in 1917 Pechstein creates appropriate paintings and graphics. Among others, this woodcut clearly shows the influence of the Palau culture.
